This fast-paced course introduces some of the types of records and techniques needed for researching your family tree. It highlights vital records (civil and church), census records and probates (wills), showing how to extract and evaluate data. Secondary sources are touched on in the course and examples are shown of how to use online newspaper indexes as finding aids and how to use newspaper accounts of events to flesh out other data.
Course Instructor: Linda Reid
Linda Reid is a retired librarian and has been researching her British roots for over 30 years. She volunteers in the Toronto Family History Centre and speaks at genealogy conferences and workshops throughout Ontario. She is actively involved in the Toronto Branch of the OGS, presently serving as program coordinator and compiler of the Branch’s electronic bulletin.
HOW TO GET TO THE COURSE LOCATION
The Toronto Reference Library building is on the east side of Yonge Street, one block north of Bloor Street.
By public transit:
The closest TTC subway station is Bloor/Yonge.
It is not recommended to drive to the Library. Parking in the immediate area is extremely limited.
