Winter 2019 courses

The winter semester of Toronto Branch courses gets underway in January 2019, with a focus on hands-on learning!

On Tuesday evenings in January, join instructor Marian Press for Using Digital Newspapers On-line for Genealogy, a three-week course at the Toronto Reference Library on how to find and make the most of newspapers for family history research. The emphasis will be on historical newspapers from North America, the UK and Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

And instructor Jane MacNamara will lead two three-week courses at the Archives of Ontario in February and March. In each of these courses, participants will learn how to navigate the finding aids, numbering systems and collections at the Archives of Ontario by working through assigned case histories in small groups.

On Tuesday afternoons in February, join Jane for Hands-On Records of Inheritance, and find out not only how to locate estate files and land registry records but how to understand and build on your discoveries.

Jane’s second course, Hands-On Early Ontario Land Records, is being offered on Thursday afternoons in March. Find out how the early land grant process worked and how to mine rich Crown Land records to document an ancestor’s acquisition of property in Upper Canada.

Registration is now open for all three winter Branch courses. Visit our Learn with Toronto Branch pages for full details and to sign up online. We encourage you to register before the end-of-year rush to avoid disappointment. Space is limited in all of our educational events and they can fill up quickly.

Members of the Ontario Genealogical Society enjoy discounts on our course fees—just one of the benefits of membership in the Society and Toronto Branch. Join or renew for 2019 before November 30 and you’ll also be entered in a special early bird draw.

November 2018 meeting

The last Toronto Branch meeting of 2018 will take place on Monday 26 November starting at 7:30 p.m. at Lansing United Church in North York.

In keeping with Branch tradition, we’ll be celebrating the end of the year with our own Great Moments in Genealogy. This annual event is always a favourite! Eight Branch members will each share one “great moment” in their family history research. Please join us for intriguing and inspiring presentations on family mysteries, genealogical sleuthing and brilliant breakthroughs. Light refreshments will be served during an extended break time.

As usual, the Members Network will be gathering before the main meeting (beginning at 6:15).  All Branch members are welcome to participate and share experiences with others pursuing their family history research!

Lansing United Church is located two blocks south-west of Sheppard and Yonge, at Poyntz Avenue and Beecroft Road (enter from Poyntz). It’s a short walk from the Sheppard-Yonge subway station, which also links to frequent bus service. If you are driving, parking on local streets is free after 6:00 p.m., and there are pay parking lots close by. The few spaces in the church parking lot are reserved for members with accessibility needs.

To find out more about our November speakers and topics, and what’s in store for 2018, please visit our Meetings page or browse through our Calendar.
