Finding Images Online at Library and Archives Canada @ ONLINE LECTURE

Pictures and images add texture and flavour to your family’s story. Seeing where your ancestors lived, what they wore, their social conditions and environs can tell you so much more than a simple document.

Library and Archives Canada holds a vast collection of images and many of these are now available digitally. In addition to photos of people, these include maps, architectural drawings, artwork, military medals, stamps and much, much more. You may even find a photo or illustration of your actual ancestor. And LAC’s digital images extend beyond its website to its social media platforms—have you checked out Flickr?

LAC Senior Reference Archivist Sophie Tellier will take you on a virtual tour of these materials and show you how to search for them.

And… did you know that LAC has just redesigned their website? As an added bonus to webinar attendees, you’ll get a short tour of the new site, which is still being rolled out in stages. Learn how to find your traditional genealogy resources—your old bookmarks won’t work once the new site is up and running!

Speaker Sophie Tellier is Senior Reference Archivist, Public Services Branch at Library and Archives Canada, based in Ottawa. As a teen, her curiosity about her Irish ancestors ignited a passion for genealogical research, which led to a career working in the Archives. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in History (University of Ottawa) and a Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences (EBSI, Université de Montréal). She has been working as a Reference Archivist at Library and Archives Canada for the past 25 years all the while pursuing her research into her family’s history. She has also collaborated on a book about her Tellier ancestors.

Note: The lecture will be recorded, so that registrants who can’t attend the live presentation may watch at a more convenient time.
